IIO clears Nelson cop of offence in Stevenson arrest

The Nelson Police Department has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Independent Investigations Office regarding the serious injury sustained by alleged armed robber Andrew Stevenson.

Stevenson fractured his hip and leg after jumping off the bridge at the Kootenay Canal last April.

He was trying to flee police after the armed robbery of the Nelson Credit Union.

The IIO has published its report and says it can not conclude that the officer may have committed any offence.

Stevenson says he jumped off the bridge for fear of his life because he claims the police officer said, quote “I will blow you away.” This is contrary to the police officer’s statement and testimony from the civilian witness who was also on scene.

In summing up part of the report’s concluding analysis of all evidence presented Kellie Kilpatrick with IIO says the Chief Civilian Director found the allegations against the police officer not to be true.

Stevenson and partner Krista Kalmikoff are charged with multiple armed robberies across our region including Nelson, Castlegar , Robson and Salmo.
