Low snow pack

While we’re not as low as other parts of BC the impact of the warm winter is being seen very clearly in the lack of snow pack.

West Kootenay stands at 84% of normal while the Boundary is at 87%.

As a specific example the measuring station in Nelson is showing just 63% of the normal snow accumulation for this time of year.

It’s still too early to say what sort of impact this may have on our rivers because there are still two months of the season to go in the snow pillow elevations.

But weather predictions are calling for continued higher than normal temperatures.

Some of the hardest hit areas of BC include Vancouver Island at 33% of normal and Lower Fraser at 36%.

A very low snow pack can hurt river levels throughout the Spring and may impact agriculture and recreation.
