City of Nelson opens cooling centres amid heat warning

The City of Nelson has opened its cooling centres as extreme heat is expected to persist through Thursday, according to Environment Canada.

In a social media post, the city said it’s working with community partners to provide dedicated cooling spaces from July 29 to 31.

Those needing relief from the heat can visit the following locations, both of which will also be offering cold water and light snacks:

  • Nelson Public Library – 601 Stanley Street
    Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • ANKORS Education West – 101 Baker Street
Open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    Open Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Additionally, those who are outdoors are encouraged to use the city’s shaded green spaces, including Lakeside Park, Gyro Park, and Lions Park.

Public water fountains are available at the Lakeside Park concession building, soccer fields, Rotary Shelter, and the portaloo at Baker and Hall Street. Water fountains can also be found at Lions Park.

If you are experiencing symptoms of heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately.
