Slocan to seek big borrowing for micro hydro project

The proposed micro-hydro project on Springer Creek in Slocan will be a true community initiative.

This from mayor Jessica Lunn now that council has decided to apply for a federal grant to cover two thirds of the cost.

The project would divert some water above the canyon to a small power station in the camp ground.

The village would go to referendum on borrowing up to $1.3 million of the estimated $3.4 million cost.

But Lunn says there are many regional grants that could reduce the size of that loan.

Two thirds of the funding would come from the federal Building Canada fund if their application is successful.

The project would generate about $300,000 annually and help cover the 60% gap left in the tax base since the demise of the saw mill.
