The Nelson Police Department was involved in the safe disposal of a pipe bomb on Wednesday afternoon.
A press release stated that the NPD, with assistance from the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit, attended a scene near the intersection of Douglas and Pine Streets after receiving a report of a suspected improvised explosive device.
The department said it received the report at 8 p.m. on August 12, after a local youth had discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb while in the Trail area.
The youth brought the device back to his home in Nelson, where his parents contacted police and secured the item in a locked storage shed.
The Nelson Police Department immediately liaised with the RCMP explosives unit.
Following consultation, the RCMP advised NPD that they would attend the scene to safely secure and dispose of the device, which was successfully carried out on August 13.
The explosives unit noted that the device was capable of causing death and/or bodily harm, and could have spread shrapnel up to 50 feet.
The matter remains under investigation.
The area of Pine and Douglas Streets was closed to the public for a period of time.
