Nelson Rec issue sees cracks in regional relationship

Only three months after the local elections and cracks are appearing in the promise of better relations between Nelson and its neighbors.

New Area F Director Tom Newell says Nelson reneged on a long-standing deal by withdrawing an annual $184,000 grant towards the running of the Community Complex.

He wants that money back on the table before discussions can happen around any new funding model.

Nelson withdrew the money just before signing off on the big pool renovation project saying it was necessary to highlight the urgent need for a more fair cost sharing formula among all regional rec users.

Newell says Area F taxpayers pay exactly what Nelson’s do and the current situation will make him consider other partnerships they have with the city.
