Cottonwood Creek cleanup returns next week

The second annual Cottonwood Creek cleanup will take place Sept. 23 in celebration of B.C. Rivers Day.

The cleanup is hosted by the Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS).

Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate. They will meet at the Cottonwood Falls Park parking lot at 1 p.m. The event runs until 3 p.m.

It is part of Living Lakes Canada’s ongoing Cottonwood Creek Revival Project, which aims to revitalize the creek’s health and biodiversity.

FoKLSS will provide supplies, including buckets, trash pickers, gloves and garbage bags, though quantities are limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if possible.

“We’re proud to celebrate B.C. Rivers Day by connecting the community with this important urban stream,” said Lily Feeback, FoKLSS program co-ordinator, in a news release.

“Events like this help us build a culture of care and stewardship around local water bodies.”

Light snacks and refreshments will be available, and FoKLSS swag will be offered by donation. Families and children are welcome.

To participate, individuals must RSVP through the FoKLSS event page.

Volunteers are also encouraged to sign an online waiver in advance to save time. Click here for the adult waiver and here for the youth waiver.
