Two undetonated grenades safely destroyed in Nelson

The RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit and the Department of National Defence were called to Nelson last week to destroy two undetonated grenades found in a basement.

The Nelson Police Department said a resident discovered the grenades while cleaning out their basement on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The explosives were believed to have been kept by a former family member.

Police officers attended the home and confirmed the items were undisturbed in an area separate from the living space.

The grenades were secured and left untouched, and police said there was no risk to the public at any time.

The department then contacted the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) and was advised the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the Department of National Defence (DND).

On Oct. 17, DND officials attended the residence and retrieved the grenades.

They were transported to a secure location, where the explosives were safely destroyed using a controlled detonation.

“Items such as grenades or ammunition can be extremely dangerous, even if they appear old or inactive. The safest action is always to leave them in place and call police,” said Special Const. Taburiaux.

Police advise anyone who finds a suspected explosive item to:

  • Remain calm and do not touch or move the item.

  • Ensure others stay away from the area.

  • Contact police immediately by calling 911.

  • Follow instructions from emergency personnel.
