No budget for extra Nelson Police officers

The Nelson Police Department will not get the budget for the two new officers it says it badly needs.

Mayor Deb Kozak says council and staff have deliberated the last eight weeks on all budget matters which keeps the police numbers status quo.

The city has included a one-time allocation of $50,000 for the police to ease extra pressures on officers such as admin.

Kozak says there will be more discussions on the nature of police calls and how further stresses can be alleviated.

The police chief has said his numerical strength is neither appropriate nor safe.

Two new officers could cost around $225,000 a year.

The city hosts its budget open house Thursday at the library.

The provisional budget for the Queen City features a 2% inflationary tax increase.
