The Nelson-based Intercultural Kootenays Society is set to receive provincial funding to revitalize its community anti-racism helpline.
The project will re-evaluate the current community anti-racism reporting tool and implement improvements to increase the visibility and utilization of the tool.
Kootenay-Central MLA Brittny Anderson said the goal is to make the tool more visible, accessible and effective for those experiencing racism in the community.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard,” said Anderson in a statement. “We’re proud to see local organizations leading this work right here in the Kootenays.”
The organization is one of four in B.C.’s interior receiving funds through the province’s annual Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Grants program, which is providing a total of $300,000 this year to 62 organizations province wide.
The province said each of the 62 organizations will receive as much as $5,000 to support projects that fight racism and racial inequality.
“Our community partners are leading important work to counter racism and build a healthier, stronger B.C.,” said Amna Shah, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives in a press release.
“We’re proud to invest in the people and organizations doing this critical work every day. We will continue to do what is right to bring people together and eradicate racism.”
Since 2015, the annual grant program has provided more than $3 million to support more than 700 anti-racism and multiculturalism projects in B.C
