Newell unhappy with Nelson recreation “bullying”

The Director for rural Area F remains very unhappy with Nelson’s stance in the regional recreation dispute.

Tom Newell is responding to the Queen City’s offer to re-instate a $184,000 annual grant it withdrew and to place it in the NDCC reserve fund.

But the city says it’ll take that money back if there is no review into a new funding model by late 2016.

Nelson wants a more equitable deal among the partners on the NDCC costs.

It says it initially withdrew the grant (ahead of voting to approve the NDCC Aquatic Centre renovations) to prompt the much-needed conversations on a new deal.

Newell labels the move by Nelson’s majority on the Recreation Commission as “bullying” which effectively changed a bylaw that clearly states the $184,000 grant is to be paid each year.
