Prescribed burn scheduled for Harrop-Procter

A prescribed burn is scheduled to occur in the Slater Creek area, near Harrop-Procter, as early as tomorrow.

The burn is being conducted collaboratively between BC Wildfire and the Harrop-Proctor Community Co-operative to help reduce the risk of wildfires.

The burn area is located 3.5 kilometers southwest of Harrop and will cover up to 20 hectares.

The exact timing will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Wednesday.

The BC Wildfire Service said smoke may impact residents near the burn area and could be visible from Harrop-Procter, Balfour and surrounding communities, as well as motorists traveling along Highway 3A.

Key goals of the burn include reducing accumulations of dead wood and other combustible material, promoting the growth of deciduous herbs and shrubs, and decreasing the risk and impacts of future wildfires in the area.

Burning will only proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for appropriate smoke dispersal. However, the BC Wildfire Service warns smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations.

“Despite all smoke management precautions, unintended smoke impacts are possible after any burn,” said BCWFS officials in a press release.
