Free shoreline workshops planned for Kootenay Lake residents

The Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKLSS), in partnership with the Kootenay Lake Partnership, will host a series of five free workshops this August and September to help shoreline property owners and residents learn about protecting the health of Kootenay Lake.

The workshops are part of the Shoreline Homeowner Project, which is intended to provide practical information for homeowners, recreational users and other community members on ways they can help care for the lake and its shoreline.

Sessions are scheduled for Kaslo, Harrop, Crawford Bay, Creston and Nelson.

According to the organizers, Kootenay Lake’s shorelines support important ecological, cultural, recreational and economic values. They also hold cultural significance for Indigenous Peoples, including the Ktunaxa, whose connection to the area spans thousands of years.

Workshop topics will include the ecological role of healthy shorelines and practical steps property owners can take to protect them. Organizers said no previous experience or technical knowledge is required, and the sessions are intended to be accessible to anyone interested in the health of Kootenay Lake.

The workshops are one component of a broader public outreach initiative that also includes a mailout to more than 2,000 residents around the lake and the production of a short film featuring Ktunaxa stewardship practices and stories from local residents.

The workshops are free and open to the public.
