Evacuation alert lifted for Poplar Creek wildfire area

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has rescinded an evacuation alert for properties affected by the Poplar Creek wildfire north of Kaslo.

The alert was issued Aug. 1 and covered 30 addresses from 15904 Highway 31 north through the community of Poplar Creek to Rapid Creek in Electoral Area D.

The RDCK said the alert was rescinded on the recommendation of the B.C. Wildfire Service because the wildfire threat has decreased.

The Poplar Creek wildfire was discovered July 26 and was caused by lightning. The blaze remains out of control and is estimated at about 292 hectares, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service map.

The RDCK is reminding residents to remain prepared in case conditions change and an evacuation alert or order needs to be reissued. People are encouraged to have emergency kits ready and make plans for pets and livestock if another evacuation becomes necessary.

Information about Evacuation Orders and Alerts in the RDCK can be found on the RDCK website.
