Relocated Nelson grizzlies now in Christina Lake

Two grizzly yearlings relocated from the Nelson area earlier this month are now frequenting Christina Lake, according to WildSafeBC Nelson.

The two siblings were captured on Aug. 14 after their mother was dispatched by conservation officers. The yearlings were then released at an undisclosed location.

Not long after their relocation, community members in the Christina Lake area began sharing reports and photos on social media of two young grizzlies frequenting the community.

WildSafeBC has since confirmed those bears are the two yearlings relocated from Nelson nearly two weeks ago.

WildSafeBC Nelson community co-ordinator Lisa Thomson said she connected the bears to the Nelson relocation based on the timing, their physical appearance, ear tags and radio collars.

She said she later contacted a Ministry official, who confirmed they were the two yearlings relocated from Nelson.

The bears are being monitored through their radio collars.

A male yearling associated with the group was also euthanized after officials determined an injured leg, its age and conflict history made it unsuitable for rehabilitation or relocation.
