Nitehawks pull away from Leafs in 4-1 win

The Nelson Leafs struck first, but the Beaver Valley Nitehawks took control over the final two periods to earn a 4-1 victory Wednesday night.

After a scoreless opening period, Nelson broke through 4:25 into the second when Jackson Gair scored his first of the season on the power play, with Rhett Newton picking up the assist.

The lead lasted just over seven minutes.

Owen Dickson tied the game for Beaver Valley at 11:58 before Nathan Planger put the Nitehawks ahead 2-1 with 1:43 remaining in the second.

Beaver Valley carried that momentum into the third. Deegan Kyle extended the advantage to 3-1 just 2:45 into the period before Cole Hashimoto added a power-play goal at 12:42 to seal the 4-1 result.

Planger finished with a goal and two assists to lead the Nitehawks with three points.

Beaver Valley controlled much of the play, outshooting Nelson 35-14, including a 24-8 advantage through the opening 40 minutes.

The Leafs went one-for-eight on the power play, while Beaver Valley finished one-for-seven.

Nelson split the night between goaltenders Jacob Armstrong and Reed Cathro. Armstrong stopped 22 of 24 shots through two periods, while Cathro made nine saves on 11 shots in the third.

Beaver Valley also used two goaltenders. Kayd Mercier stopped six of seven shots before Cohen Fowler turned aside all seven he faced and was credited with the win.
