Health warning issued over mushrooms sold in Harrop

Interior Health is warning residents not to eat mushrooms sold at the Harrop Community Hall on Sunday.

The B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre has reviewed the mushrooms and identified them as potentially toxic.

The mushrooms have been tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus, also known as brown roll-rim or common roll-rim mushrooms.

Interior Health said eating the mushrooms can cause severe health outcomes, with symptoms generally beginning within two hours. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, dark-coloured urine and diarrhea.

Anyone who purchased the mushrooms is directed not to eat them and to dispose of them immediately.

Anyone who has already consumed the mushrooms or is experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention right away. The B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre can also be reached at 1-800-567-8911.

There have been no known reports of illness at this time.

Interior Health said it is working to contact people who may have purchased the mushrooms and will provide further information as needed.
