Local teachers union responds to govt Pro D moves

A local union rep says BC teachers have been doing a good job of looking after their own professional advancement.

Paul Boscariol the President of the Nelson and District Teachers Association is responding to the government’s move Thursday to step in and regulate teacher’s professional development.

Boscariol says teachers spend their five Pro D days a year ensuring they advance their skills and knowledge whether that’s in Nelson or beyond.

Boscariol says the government attempt to regulate professional development is all about control.

The BC Teachers Federation calls the move a diversion from government’s under-funding of education.

The government says there is currently no legislative requirement for Pro D and they want to ensure teachers are indeed doing that.
