Nelson Public Library invites community to Oct. 8 open house

The Nelson Public Library is inviting residents from Nelson and surrounding communities to an open house Oct. 8 as part of Canadian Library Month.

The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include family-friendly games, prizes, cake and opportunities to connect with community members and candidates in the upcoming municipal election.

The library said it has experienced significant growth this year, recording nearly 90,000 visits during the first six months of 2026, a 50 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.

“People from Nelson and communities throughout the region use the library every day,” said Laura Harris, Chief Librarian. “It’s buzzing with activity, and Library Month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything that’s happening here and invite even more people to be part of it.”

The open house will also give residents an opportunity to meet candidates ahead of Nelson’s Oct. 17 municipal election.

The library said the event is intended to highlight its role as a public gathering place where residents can access information, exchange ideas and participate in community life.

Artist and writer Billy Flowery Allen also highlighted the role libraries play in their communities.

“Libraries are critical to the vitality and well-being of the communities they serve,” said Allen. “I hope current and future elected representatives continue to support the Nelson Public Library with the same generosity and commitment the library shows this community every day.”

The open house is open to longtime library users, newcomers and residents of surrounding communities served by the Nelson Public Library.
