New pickleball nets serve up better play at Lakeside Park

Nelson residents have another option for getting active at Lakeside Park following the installation of two new tournament-quality pickleball net systems.

The new equipment gives players improved public access to pickleball while allowing the existing courts to remain available for other recreational activities.

Nelson Council approved the purchase following a request from local pickleball players seeking public access at the Lakeside Park courts.

The portable nets can be rolled into place on courts already lined for pickleball and moved when the space is needed for other activities.

The approach allows the city to accommodate growing interest in pickleball without dedicating the courts exclusively to the sport. Tennis and basketball will continue to be supported at the multi-use facility.

The city said the two nets were delivered for slightly less than the approved $6,000 budget, with ongoing maintenance and operating costs expected to be covered through existing parks resources.

The addition gives Nelson residents and visitors another way to use Lakeside Park while maintaining the flexibility of the public recreation space.
