The Kootenay Co-op is reminding Nelson city council of the benefits of creating three subsidized units at Nelson Commons.
The idea of a 25% discount on three units -which would have a restricted resale covenant – actually gets people into affordable housing. This from Project Manager Russell Precious.
He is again asked council not to request a thousand dollars per unit – or $54,000 in total – for the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. He says that’s an effective tax on each new owner at Nelson Commons.
Precious says a $54,000 contribution won’t get anyone into a house but their subsidized idea – which is used by other municipalities- will. He hopes to make his case at a meeting of the Nelson Housing Committee Tuesday.
