Commons project affordable plan approved

The Nelson Commons developers will get their affordable housing plan.

Nelson council last night voted 5 to 1 to approve the Co-op’s request to have three “restricted resale” units in their new project- discounted at 25% – rather than pay $54,000 into the city’s affordable housing fund.

Councillor Michael Dailly says ultimately this was approved because there was a previous understanding in place.

While Dailly voted in favour he says he would have preferred something more affordable as these three units don’t meet the most needy in the community. But he adds at least this has started the ball rolling on a new type of affordability for working people on a modest income.

Nelson will administer the resale of the units and determine qualification criteria.

Council did not approve another request to waive nearly $10,000 in connection fees.
