Stay calm:resident recounts bear encounter

What would you do if you walked into your kitchen in the middle of the night and came face-to-face with a black bear?

That’s what happened to Ron Turk, a resident of Ridgewood Road on Nelson’s north shore.

Ron initially thought it was his cat making the noise in the kitchen.

He didn’t have his cell phone so jumped from the second floor window and called the RCMP from a neighbour’s house. The police came but the bear – and it’s mother which was outside – ran off.

He says the bear got in after ripping off a screen from an open window.
