Nelson biomass energy plant idea presented

A bio-mass district energy plant in Nelson can make a massive difference in running costs and carbon reductions.

So says the city’s Corporate Energy Coordinator Fiona Galbraith in presenting a good argument for a wood waste-burning facility.

The plant would create hot water heating for a core of buildings and local mills would give the fuel for free.

It would cost about $5 million but grants or borrowing would mean no hit to taxpayers.

Council will consider a business plan in July.
