The mayor of Nelson says there’s a realization that dealing with the high rate of mentally disturbed people in the city needs a team effort.
Deb Kozak -who is also the Police Board Chair – is speaking after Wednesday’s initial meeting of the city, police, Interior Health and social service groups.
One idea being explored came from Nelson Community Services who’ve suggested a street outreach worker team up with a police officer.
Interior Health has previously rejected the Police Chief’s call for a dedicated mental health squad car.
But Kozak says IH did have a high-level delegation at the meeting and she’s positive a plan can be implemented within months.
