The city of Nelson has moved to strict water restrictions as their reservoir levels drop because of the very dry weather.
Residents can only use sprinkler systems once a week – on a Wednesday or Thursday – depending on house number.
Fines could be issued for non-compliance.
Fire Chief Len MacCharles says his main concern is having enough water in the system to fight a major fire.
He says city staff and the public can pass around the importance of cutting back.
Residents have used 35% more water than this time last year and restrictions from earlier this summer have not worked.
