Bear shot in Nelson

Nelson police say they and the conservation office had to kill a bear in the Fairview neighborhood Friday afternoon.

The animal had been spotted about 40 feet up a tree and was showing signs of stress.

The bear had been up there for 7 hours when police were called and it was reported that the animal had become a problem by frequenting the area.

Police say residents must ensure attractants are properly secured and disposed of.

There is a shortage of natural food sources for bears this year and they are seeking alternatives.
