10 years in jail for convicted robber

Both legal sides in the Andrew Stevenson armed robbery case say the sentence handed down by the Nelson court is appropriate.

The 35 year old got 10 years for using a loaded sawed off shot gun last year to rob 2 financial institutions in Nelson and for using a possible imitation gun for offences in Castlegar and Robson.

Defence lawyer Ken Wyllie says Stevenson, who is addicted to oxycodone and morphene to ease life-long arthritis pain, immediately waived his right to appeal the sentence.

Mandatory minimum sentencing for the various crimes could have added up to 18 years but the judge said, in part, that the 10 years was proportionate to the offences and Stevenson was motivated by his addiction not greed.

He’ll actually serve just over 8 years because of credits for time already in custody.
