UPDATED: 400 litres of oil spills in Kootenay Lake

The Ministry of Environment says the most concentrated areas of oil that spilled from the Osprey ferry at Balfour Saturday have been recovered.

Up to 500 litres of gear oil went into the water and drifted about 400 metres from the terminal.

RDCK emergency coordinator Nora Hannon, who is also with the Balfour-Harrop Fire Department,  says they were part of the initial response with operator Western Pacific Marine.

On Sunday the ministry says no distressed wildlife had been reported.

Interior Health has warned against going into the water near the terminal although there is no health risk on the beach.

Western Pacific Marine said Sunday they were reporting to community and federal agencies as required and the clean up and containment efforts with an environmental response team would continue the next two days.

The Osprey was due for maintenance the next few weeks and is set to return to service by April 30.
