Nelson residents cut water consumption by 2.5 million litres

Nelson residents appear to have taken the city’s water conservation measures to heart.

Municipal services manager Chris Gainham says water use is down by about 2.5 million litres over the last few days.

But they need people to continue to observe Level 1 water restrictions.

Even-numbered address are only allowed to use sprinklers on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Odd-numbered address can only water on Thursdays and Sundays.

You’re also limited to between 4 and 9 a.m. and 7 and 10 p.m. on those days.

Gainham says this week’s rain helped but only a bit.

The city has started tapping into secondary water sources to supplement the supply.

They’re also using non-potable water to irrigate parks and sports fields.
