UPDATED: Evacuation alert issued for Poplar Creek

Fourteen people at Poplar Creek are under evacuation alert due to the 34-hectare Rapid Creek fire.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay issued the alert Sunday.

In a news release, they said the fire “is displaying increased activity as the northwest winds are pushing it out into the face of the hill. With continued hot, dry conditions and forecasted winds, there is the potential of putting Highway 31 and Poplar Creek at risk.”

People living between Rusty Creek and Cascade Creek along Highway 31 are being told to get ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

The Southeast Fire Centre crews is continuing to monitor the fire and will be sending in heavy equipment for ground crews to create a fire break between the fire and the community.
