Civic Centre posted $149,000 deficit in 2016

The City of Nelson subsidized the Civic Centre’s operations by $149,000 last year.

Half a dozen groups have space in the building but the city doesn’t fully recover its costs from any of them.

But recreation commission chair Valerie Warmington prefers not to view it as a deficit.

The building needs $470,000 worth of work.

Warmington says they’re trying to standardize their rental agreements as each one expires.

But the Glacier Gymnastics Club came to council this year concerned about a proposed rent increase.

They said having to pay another $20,000 would result in higher enrollment fees or reduced programs.
