Local MP’s bill closes loophole in Species at Risk Act

The federal government has adopted a local MP’s private member’s bill.

Richard Cannings introduced a bill to amend the Species at Risk Act to close a loophole used to delay or deny protection for species deemed at risk.

He says this has been a goal of his since coming to Ottawa.

He says now the Minister of Environment and Climate Change will have a clear deadline to add species to the list.

He brought the bill to the House of Commons in September.

The previous government made no decisions about 82 species considered at risk between 2011 and 2015.
