Fixed-term legislation concerns local landlords

Local landlords say changes to the Residential Tenancy Act could unintentionally reduce the rental market.

The province has removed the ability of landlords to evict tenants from fixed-term agreements.

But Trevor Jenkinson of the West Kootenay Landlord Society says removing the ability to evict will make landlords less likely to rent to certain people.

Jenkinson says it may also result in fewer units in an already tight housing market.

The change was meant to stop landlords from bypassing rent controls but Jenkinson says that’s not an issue here.

He’s asking Nelson city council to take it up with the government.
