Local MP looking to establish National Local Food Day

Kootenay-Columbia’s MP is campaigning to support local food.

Wayne Stetski introduced the Private Member Bill C-281, An Act to Establish a National Local Food Day, into the house on Monday. The bill would designate the Friday before Thanksgiving of each year as National Local Food Day. Stetski says local food is very important.

The bill will have it’s second reading around June 12, from there it will go to the Agriculture Committee for review. Stetski says he will be campaigning all over Canada in the summer before the bill has a potential third reading in the fall.

Stetski says the first debate for the Bill C-281 was well received by the house, ‘It was inspiring to hear stories about the value local food has across the country, and to hear MP’s from different parties supporting each other’s statements. I look forward to more celebration and support of local food systems as this bill moves forward through the legislative process.’
