The City of Nelson has been easing regulations around laneway housing in hopes of making it a more attractive option to develop. Nelson City Council gave first and second readings to increase the height limits yesterday. A second story will soon be allowed with a maximum height of 5.8 meters. For a laneway house with a garage the limit is 6.1 meters.
Alex Thumm with Development Services says it makes more financial sense for builders.
He says a development permit will be needed for anything over five meters, which should be a better process than having to obtain a variance.
That includes working to reduce the impact on neighbours.
A public hearing will happen before final approval of the changes.
