Nelson Council Candidate: Laureen Barker

Laureen Barker is running for Nelson City Council.  She’s lived in the city for 13 years and has been active on a number of boards.

“I’m in my eighth year of sitting on the [Nelson and District] Credit Union board in Nelson.  I’ve been chairing the Governance Committee for the last five years. We do a lot of training and it’s a very collaborative process, the way we make decisions, and I think that that’s important.”

She says a big concern for her is the wildfire risk in Nelson, as well as the impacts of flooding and land slides in rural areas, but overall she mainly wants to help the community she loves.

“I don’t really have a lot of issues, I just feel like there’s work to be done on an ongoing basis and I’m prepared and able to do it and I’m willing to volunteer.”

She currently owns Gaia Rising with her husband on Baker Street.
