Applications to fly banners no longer considered after decision in council

NELSON, B.C – Nelson will no longer consider applications from community groups requesting to fly banners over Baker Street after a decision in City Council Tuesday night.

The matter has raised debate after a Right to Life-banner sparked outrage in Nelson earlier.
City manager Kevin Cormack said that the decision to no longer consider banners stems from the concerns over what banners would be considered appropriate.
“As a local government, we have a responsibility to treat everyone equally as long as they are not offending or infringing on human rights. It did take staff time, so we will really stick to flags at this stage”, Cormack told MyNelsonNow.com.

The newly formalized policy will also prohibit banners, such as those recently visible during the Kootenay pride celebrations, which representatives of the local LGBTQ-community have been critical against.
