The BC government is urging residents in the interior with the forecasted rain and snow melt to start preparing for flooding.
According to a media release, warm temperatures and accelerated snowmelts have caused an increased pressure on rivers and creeks. Also conditions are expected to worsen as rain continues to hit the region.
People living in the central interior, Okanagan, boundary, southern Kootenays and Similkameen regions are being asked to remain vigilant and have a plan in place in the event a flood strikes.
The ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness says residents should have essentials such as a first aid kit, personal medication, food and water and all important documents ready to go in the event of an evacuation.
Flood warnings are in place for west Kootenay, east Kootenay and Boundary.
Sandbags are being deployed to local governments and First Nations, including Grand Forks, Cache Creek and Okanagan Indian Band.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as well as highway maintenance crews are monitoring water levels for any impacts to the provincial highway network and are ready to respond, but always check DriveBC.ca for the latest travel information.
The warning is scheduled to be in effect from May 5 to 7.
