Salmo pool reno runs into delays

Salmo’s outdoor swimming pool is not expected to reopen until the last week of July.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says a renovation project is taking longer than expected due to unexpected conditions in the mechanical room.

They say the electrical system needs to be brought up to code, extensive rot was discovered meaning 90 per cent of the building studs and sill plates will need to be replaced, and roof sheathing was found to be untreated and unprotected and will need to be replaced.

The RDCK said additional forms and rebar will be needed to reinforce the full slab and ensure the building’s structural integrity.

A new boiler also has to be installed before the pool can be made available to the public again.

“The safety of our staff and users remains the top priority,” the RDCK said, adding their project management team will continue to work with the contractor to get the project done quickly.

They also said the work could not have waited until the end of summer.
