Police vehicles rammed, spike strips deployed in stolen truck case

A Trail man was arrested near Nelson after stealing a truck, colliding with three police vehicles, and evading arrest.

Police officials said an officer in Salmo spotted the stolen Toyota Tundra at around 1:30 p.m. on Jan 9.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled towards Nelson at high speed.

Police officials said the officer did not pursue the vehicle out of concern for public safety.

A roadblock was set up between Salmo and Nelson, but it did not stop the truck.

“The vehicle collided with three police vehicles, and an officer outside his patrol vehicle, and continued dangerously toward Nelson,” said RCMP officials. “The officer struck by the suspect’s vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from hospital.”

Police took a different approach, but that did not quite work as intended.

“As officers attempted to use a spike belt, several civilian vehicles accidentally drove over it, resulting in damage, however no injuries,” said RCMP officials.

RCMP officials said the suspect vehicle was found abandoned near the Nordic Ski Club and the suspect was located and arrested by officers who had help from a snowmobiler.

The 42-year-old man from Trail was held in custody pending a bail hearing. He is facing several charges, including assaulting a police officer.

“This was a highly dangerous and volatile situation, and we’re thankful no member of the public was harmed by this man’s reckless behaviour,” said Cpl. James Grandy, BC RCMP spokesperson.
