Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s largest annual event set for this Sunday, May 26 in Nelson.
Dementia is expected to be one of the greatest challenges of our time, with B.C. expected to see one of the most dramatic increases in prevalence at a time when many people living with the disease and their caregivers are already struggling to access the care they need.
On Sunday, May 26, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s largest annual fundraiser – the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, – will raise essential funds to support more than 85,000 people currently living with dementia in B.C. and their caregivers, while investing in research to change the future of the disease.
For a limited time, anyone who fundraises or donates can make twice the difference. Generous provincial Walk patrons – Aune Foundation, Cowell Foundation and Lecky Foundation – will match all donations made online to the event by Sunday, May 26, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000.
The walk not only funds critical programs and services, including dementia education, support groups and the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s First Link Dementia Helpline, it’s an opportunity to break down stigma and reduce the risk of developing it by getting active and socializing with neighbours.
“Dementia affects everyone – whether at home, at our workplaces or anywhere in the community – and everyone has a role to play in changing the future of dementia,” says Cathryn France, the charity’s Chief Development Officer.
“At the Alzheimer Society of B.C. we’re so grateful for everyone who joins us at Walks in communities across B.C. to show people affected by dementia that they are not alone.”
Each of the community events across B.C. is held in honour of an individual or group whose life has been affected by dementia, or who has invaluably contributed to the lives of people living with the disease.
