Historic ‘Ladybird’ Speedboat removed from Hall Street Pier display

The historic Ladybird speedboat has been removed from its temperature-controlled display at Nelson’s Hall Street Pier to allow for further mechanical balancing.

This comes a month after the City announced the ‘soft’ grand opening of the completed Hall Street Pier project on July 5, 2024.

According to Chris Johnson, the City’s Community Planning Manager, it’s not uncommon for new buildings to take some time to sort out mechanical components.

“The Ladybird has been moved to allow for some additional mechanical balancing work in the building. It is not uncommon to take some time to get the mechanical systems figured out in new buildings. It’s also worth noting that the pier was opened on a ‘soft’ basis, meaning there are still items coming, including additional plantings, seating, buoys, etc.”

Johnson said the mechanical balancing process pertains to the heating, cooling, moisture control, and overall air-handling of the display building.

He didn’t provide a timeline for when this work will be conducted or when the final touches to the pier project will be complete, but said residents can expect to see steady additions over the coming weeks and months, some of which may stretch into next spring.
