Updated: Machete man arrested for assault

Updated January 29:

Nelson’s machete man has been identified as local resident Mikhail Reid.

Reid has been charged with a assault with a weapon following last week’s incident, where he struck another man with a machete.

The exact circumstances that led to the assault remain under investigation, however, police have confirmed the victim was known to Reid and do not believe there is a risk to the public at this time.

Reid was released from custody with conditions by a judge after his bail hearing.

His next court appearance is on Tuesday, February 4.

Original Story

Nelson Police Department have arrested a man for striking another man in the hand with a machete following an altercation on Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses say they saw the aggressor wielding a machete as he chased the victim away from a residential dwelling.

The victim tripped and fell to the ground, at which point the suspect struck him in the hand with a machete.

When police arrived, they found the victim on the ground bleeding heavily from his hand and receiving medical assistance by bystanders.

Police found the suspect at the scene, still holding the machete, and placed him under arrest with no issues.

The victim, who suffered severe damage to his hand, had to be taken to hospital.

Following a bail hearing, the courts released the assailant with conditions.
