Man convicted of separate charges following crash in Nelson

A 49-year-old Alberta man who crashed a pickup truck just outside Nelson last August has been convicted on separate charges.

Jivat Aragon Martinez has been found guilty of assault with a weapon and uttering death threats in Nelson.

He returns to court Apr 29 to set a date for the sentencing hearing.

That incident happened a few days after a trip from Trail to Nelson made at extremely high-speed ended with the crumpled vehicle in a ditch after hitting a rock face on Highway 3-A just west of the city.

One witness told Nelson police a pickup that almost rear ended their car, swung out into the opposite lane and barely missed an oncoming pickup near Thrums.

Police say the truck also collided with the back of another vehicle and kept going.

Charges in that incident include dangerous driving and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

Aragon Martinez has been in custody since being arrested a month ago in Kelowna.

Those charges include assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and making death threats.
