HB tailings dam to cost taxpayers more

The cost to taxpayers keeps mounting for the old HB mining tailings pond near Salmo.

The dam nearly collapsed after heavy rains in 2012.

A spill-way retrofit is already running at double the initial cost at $176,000. Now the province has ordered new costly checks following the Mount Polley dam breach in the Cariboo.

The RDCK’s Uli Wolf says they’re already employing someone almost full-time on this project.

Wolf says work will go on for at least another two years and could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The RDCK is suing previous owners Teck for failing to address historic pollution from the site.
