Nelson Fire & Rescue extinguishes early morning house fire on Victoria Street

A home on Victoria Street sustained significant damage in a fire Wednesday morning.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services (NFRS) said it received reports of the blaze at 721 Victoria Street at 5 a.m. on July 30. Three on-duty firefighters responded quickly, and 15 were called in from home.

When crews arrived, heavy fire was visible coming from the back of the property. Firefighters prioritized ensuring all occupants had exited the home, then worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures.

Crews then initiated a fire attack and entered the home to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although the fire service said it appears to have originated on the rear deck before spreading into the home.

The house suffered significant fire, heat, and smoke damage as a result. A neighbouring house also sustained fire and smoke damage due to the narrow space between the two homes.

No injuries were reported, although NFRS noted that the damage to the home was extensive.

The fire service added that the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of reviewing your emergency escape plans- whether at home or away on vacation.

In total, 15 firefighters and one chief officer were involved in the response, along with two fire engines, one utility vehicle, and a command truck.
