Nelson Commons earth works fully underway

Once it’s built the Kootenay Co-Op’s Nelson Commons project will revitalize downtown but already there’s important environmental work going on.

Project Manager for the $ 27 million store and condos Russell Precious says the old ugly Extra Foods building is gone but crews are dealing with another mess underground.

The toxic soil is being taken away then the good earth will go to the waterfront for fill at the new Nelson Landing development.

In acknowledging the Sinixt people Precious says it’s amazing how the First Nation left nothing behind after being in the area for 12,000 years.

But now crews are dealing with pollutants from just the past hundred years.

Co-op members, construction crew and financial partners gathered for the formal ground-breaking Thursday.
