A local group aiming to eradicate grizzly and black bear deaths due to conflict over human garbage hopes to unveil bear-proof bins this year.
They’re looking for $7,500 from the RDCK to put towards other grants they’ve received so they can roll out the subsidized program. They need $25,000 to get started with a bulk buy of bins.
Gillian Sanders with the local Human-Bear Conflict Working Group says residents will be asked to pay half the $250 cost for one of the super-strong and tested units.
And those who can’t afford that can get a loan bin for the season.
The bear-proof bins -which have a steel inner lining – will be offered to homeowners in high incidence areas.
