Nelson mayor optimistic about recreation talks

With an interim agreement on regional recreation funding in place, Nelson’s mayor is optimistic about a long-term deal.

The regional district has agreed with the city’s idea to hold a contentious refund in reserves pending further talks.

Deb Kozak says she’s confident they can find something all parties can agree to by the end of next year.

If there’s no deal it would likely mean a tax increase for rural residents who pay in to recreation.

The city would like to broaden the tax base to include areas that don’t pay anything.
